Black Ghost

One of the most recognizable fly patterns, the Black Ghost was created by Herb Welch in 1919 and became widely popular by 1927. Best known as a trout fly, it has tempted more than just trout over the years. Welch, also a skilled artist and expert caster, left a lasting mark on fly fishing.

The Flóðvangur Lodge at Vatnsdalsá captures the essence of a classic fishing lodge, blending its authentic charm with understated elegance. Thoughtfully designed and surrounded by nature, the lodge offers beautiful views of the valley that enhance the experience. Each room is equipped with two comfortable beds and a private bathroom. After a day on the river, guests can unwind in the lodge’s hot tub or steam bath, enjoying the comfort and relaxation it provides.

Undertaker

The Undertaker, created by Warren Duncan of New Brunswick, is a classic salmon fly renowned for its effectiveness in low light. Its sleek black body, silver ribbing, and red accents make it a trusted choice for anglers targeting Atlantic salmon in darker conditions.

Green Highlander

First mentioned in Francis Francis’s 1885 book as The Highlander, this classic was later attributed to Mr. Grant of Wester Elchies. Renamed Green Highlander, it became a go-to fly for both sunny days and changing river conditions.

Black Sheep

An Icelandic classic, the Black Sheep was first tied by Haraldur Stefánsson as the HS Special. It earned its name for standing out among the traditional British flies in his box. Resembling an eel larva, a natural prey of Atlantic salmon, it was designed as an alternative to tube flies while maintaining the effectiveness purist anglers seek.

Haugur

Designed by Sigurður Héðinn, the Haugur fly is one of Iceland’s most well-known salmon patterns. Created from leftover materials on his tying bench, its name means pile in Icelandic. Sigurður, also known as Haugurinn, has designed nearly forty salmon flies.
